Polyphenols in the drink function as powerful antioxidant. Catechins can also inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause cavities and tooth decays.

University of Maryland Researchers think the “health-giving properties are mostly due to polyphenols, chemicals with potent antioxidant properties. In fact, the antioxidant effects of polyphenols seem to be greater than vitamin C. The polyphenols also give it a somewhat bitter flavor.

Polyphenols contained in teas are classified as catechins. It contains six primary catechin compounds: catechin, gallaogatechin, epicatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin gallate, and apigallocatechin gallate (also known as EGCG). EGCG is the most studied polyphenol component and the most active.

It also contains alkaloids including caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline. They provide a stimulant effects. L-theanine, an amino acid compound that has been studied for its calming effects on the nervous system; the low content of caffeine is known to stimulate the brain and improve metabolism by converting the fat cells into energy.

Reduced risk of cancer is another one of the health benefits. Being a great source of antioxidants, it is bound to reduce the risks of various types of cancer. It has been proven in a study that women who drink this kind of tea can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 22 %. Also it has been proven that men who drink it can reduce the possibility of prostate cancer by 48%. Also, it reduces the risk of colorectal cancer by 57 %. A 2007 study published in the British Journal of Cancer found a “higher intake of green tea was associated with a reduced risk of adult leukemia.” A recent report in the journal Cancer Biology & Therapy showed that EGCG in the extract may halt the spread of malignant breast cancer cells. The Polyphenol EGCG, is also responsible for inhibiting the activity and production of bone-eroding molecules and substances related to joint inflammation in cells taken from patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

The heart-healthy effects are attributed to the ability to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, which it does by reducing the absorption of cholesterol in the digestive tract.
